I thought the halos in old paintings referred to the sun god Helios. That is whom the Romans worshipped and why they created the false heliocentric model of the universe.
Heliopolis was an Egyptian sun worshipping city that pre-dated the Roman era at the end of which Constantine pretended to convert to Christianity. The halo is a symbol telling other pretend Christians of the catholic church hierarchy who they are Really worshipping.
