The show Sesame Street has joined the push to extend the COVID vaccine to children 5-11 years-old by announcing that Big Bird, the show’s most recognizable character, has received his first vaccination.

The call to action was done in conjunction with CNN, with Big Bird (who for the purposes of the campaign purports to be 6 years-old) asking CNN contributors questions that both young children and parents might have about the jab.

Although Sesame Street remains a popular show with children, the discussion of medical procedures with cable news personalities has many wondering who, exactly, is meant to be swayed by the effort: children tuning in to the evening news, or perhaps parents who see Big Bird as an authority over their children's medical decisions.

The call to vaccination isn’t the first time that Sesame Street has gotten political or engaged in social activism, and in the past the cast of muppets have also taken part in Pride and “Latinx” celebrations.
