United States Presidential Election of 1816
Monroe decided to seek the Presidency in 1816 and his war-time leadership had established him as Madison's heir apparent. The moribund Federalists nominated Rufus King as their presidential nominee but the party offered little opposition following the conclusion of a popular war that they had opposed. Monroe received 183 of the 217 electoral votes winning every state but MA, CT, and DE.
[His wartime leadership established him as Madison's heir apparent & he easily defeated Federalist Party candidate Rufus King in the 1816 presidential election.]
