Actually, historically, 666 was a number associated with Caesar Nero, who was one of the first notorious persecutors of early Christians and Jews. His name in the Greek and Hebrew alphabet numerically sum up to the number 666. He died in 68 AD, just before the New Testament was finished. It is speculated that the passage in Revelations about the beast and 666 is about him. He is sometimes called the original anti-Christ.
