It melts if I torch the snow directly laying on the ground outside. But it behaves strangely when compressed.

Thanks for sharing! I don't play with snow too much, but I would expect it to compact and stick together from the warmth or from dispersed moisture when melting it a bit. I just tried in CO and I think we must have real snow here.
