In medieval London, most people were Christian and there was a church on almost every street. Religion had an impact on most aspects of peopleโs lives, since schools & hospitals were run by the Church.

This refers to some of the people locked up in Newgate prison, the most notorious prison in medieval London. Many of the prisoners were debtors, meaning they didnโt pay back money they had borrowed.
The bells of the Old Bailey in the rhyme would have been the bells of St Sepulchre-without-Newgate, which stood opposite the courthouse at the time.
The medieval courthouse was yet another building destroyed by the Great Fire. It was rebuilt in 1674 and the Old Bailey is still used as a courthouse today.

The Ellacombe apparatus is a mechanism devised for performing change ringing on church bells by striking stationary bells with hammers. It does not produce the same sound as full circle ringing due to the absence of Doppler effect as the bells do not rotate, and the lack of a damping effect from the clapper after each strike.
The apparatus can be operated by one person, unlike the traditional method, where the bells are rotated through over 360 degrees (full circle ringing) to sound them and one bell-ringer is needed for each bell. Instead the bells are kept static (or "hung dead") ๐ฒ๐
