ANCIENT GARDEN CONFIRMS THE GOSPEL OF JOHN
Archaeology keeps doing what it always does when it touches the Bible. It confirms it.
Beneath the floor of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, archaeologists recently uncovered soil layers containing evidence of olive trees and grapevines dating back nearly 2,000 years. That means this area was once a cultivated garden right at the time of Jesus. That detail is not folklore. It is written in Scripture.
Excavations beneath the basilica revealed layers stretching back to the Iron Age, including pottery, oil lamps, and ancient burial sites. Scientists found that the area had originally been a quarry, then became a garden, and later served as a burial place. That timeline matches exactly what the Gospel of John describes.

John 19:41 states, “Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.” The Bible said this long before a single archaeologist ever lifted a shovel.
At the time of Christ, this site was outside the city walls. Roughly ten years later it was enclosed when Agrippa I built Jerusalem’s third wall. After the Bar Kokhba revolt in AD 132 to 135, Emperor Hadrian destroyed Jerusalem and built a pagan city over it called Aelia Capitolina, placing a temple to Venus over the site in an attempt to erase the memory of Jesus. In AD 336, Emperor Constantine removed that pagan temple and built the Church of the Holy Sepulchre over the same location.
For nearly two thousand years, Christians have identified this place as the tomb of Christ. While Scripture does not give us street addresses, archaeology keeps lining up with its details.

A garden where John said there was a garden. A tomb where the Gospel said there was a tomb.
