This document argues that America was first discovered by the Norse (Vikings), led by Leif Erikson around A.D. 1000, and that the United States should recognize this historical reality instead of centering national commemoration on Christopher Columbus.

Dated March 23, 1888 (Washington, D.C.), the document asserts that Icelandic manuscripts, sagas, and church records document Norse exploration and settlement in North America centuries before Columbus. It contends that Columbus likely knew of these lands—possibly learning details during a visit to Iceland in 1477—and that his voyage was largely a religious and political mission supported by the Catholic Church, not an original discovery. The author opposes the planned 1892 Columbus celebration and urges official recognition of Leif Erikson, ... reflecting America’s true discovery history.
