When someone experiences a biological attack-conflict (real or subjective), this triggers tissue adaption of the corium. The biological sense is to strengthen this skin layer.

After the conflict is solved, the extra tissue that has been built up, is decomposed by bacteria, which produces small pustules, which are painful, because the nerve endings are located within the corium.

No virus, no contagion.
The regeneration phase can be alleviated, but this is not necessary. The body completely regulates itself.
