Chertoff, the guy who set the Dancing Israelis free, (despite the extremely suspicious circumstances and failing lie detector tests), was the son of an Israeli and also the co-author of the Patriot Act.

Per GROK...
The surname **Chertoff** (also spelled Chertov, Chertof, etc.) is of **Eastern European Jewish (Ashkenazi)** origin, most commonly from Yiddish or Russian/Ukrainian Slavic roots.

Its meaning comes from the Russian/Slavic word **"chert"** (чёрт), which means **"devil"**.

- **Chertoff / Chertov** literally translates to **"son of the devil"** or **"devil's kin"** in Russian and Yiddish slang.
- The Slavic suffix **-ov/-off** means "son of" or "belonging to" (like Ivanov = son of Ivan).
- So Chertov = "of the devil" → Chertoff is the Yiddish/Ashkenazic adaptation of the same name.

Notable bearer:
Michael Chertoff (U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security 2005–2009) – his family name is indeed the Yiddish form of the Russian “Chertov” (devil).

So in short: **Chertoff means “(son) of the devil”** – a classic example of a dark-humor Eastern European Jewish surname.
