Tun Tavern was a Philadelphia brewhouse and meeting place for notable groups during the American Revolution. Built in 1685 by Samuel Carpenter, it's widely considered the birthplace of the United States Marine Corps.
On November 10, 1775, a Continental Congress committee met at Tun Tavern to draft a resolution for two Marine battalions to fight for independence. The resolution was approved, officially forming the Continental Marines.
