80 years ago, on Aug. 6, 1945, the United States dropped the first of two atomic bombs on Japan to force the unconditional surrender that ended World War II. The fearsome weapons were created by the secret Manhattan Project & powered by workers in Oak Ridge, TN's massive manufacturing plants used to enrich Uranium
That empire still stands where those dedicated & determined workers toiled. Federal & private facilities in Oak Ridge are driving a nuclear renaissance in America & East Tennesseans are once again the engine of the transformation.
What was previously bucolic farmland became a bustling city of around 75,000 when the area was chosen as site for Manhattan Project.
