Filmmaker, Mira Nair is Zohran Mamdani's mother. In this 2018 video, Mira shares the following:

"The head of the studio asked me, 'will you please make room for a white protagonist?'"
"And I said, I can promise you one thing; that all the waiters in this film will be white."

Mira continues by sharing that she ran into Juliette Lewis who asked when Mira was going to cast her again.
Mira responds with, "Darling, when white people interest me, I'll cast you again. You know, it's a political act."
