Utah’s House passed HB400, which requires healthcare facilities to allow patients to use their own blood or choose a donor, including for directed donations, except in emergencies. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Kristen Chevrier, aims to give patients more control, partly driven by concerns about receiving blood from vaccinated donors. Supporters argue it’s about personal choice, while critics, including the American Red Cross, warn it could strain resources and increase risks, as directed donations may be less safe due to incomplete donor health disclosures. The FDA states there’s no evidence vaccines transmit through blood transfusions. The bill awaits Senate approval.
