BTW, this fact about gold is why the Conquistadores who came to Peru for Gold could never find the gold mines of the Incas.
The Conquistadores were looking for holes in the ground, for mine shafts & for mother lodes.
There weren't any.
That was NOT how the Incas mine gold at all.
They mine by undercutting a hillside, then allowing the hillside to landslide, pulverizing the soils & rocks on the hillside surface.
Then they let it RAIN, for the East side the Andes Mountains is a tropical rain forest.
The rainwater percolates,
& percolates,
& percolates.
Then the Incas (Quechua) come back later & pick up the gold nuggets out of the soil,
cuz they know GOLD GROWS.
The Conquistadores never figured that out & just had to be content with stealing the gold of the Incas, THAT is where the wealth of Spain came from. The INCA mines they could never find.
BTW - those USA rivers that were panned & dredged in the late 1800s? Yup, they're full again.
