Syria is witnessing a surge in violence against Christians and Alawites, with at least 1,800 people killed in the past few days as the new Islamist regime expands its control. The Al Qaeda-linked government, installed after the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s rule, has targeted religious minorities in what many fear is an organized campaign of extermination.
The crisis began when Assad, who had used the Syrian military to defend Christians, fled to Russia in December following a coup led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), Syria’s Al Qaeda affiliate. The new government, under interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, initially promised stability but has instead unleashed terror on non-Sunni communities. Entire villages have been destroyed, churches burned and families executed.
