This should probably be shared to remind us all.
For those who think Russia is all the way on the other side of the world...It is about 55 miles from us at the narrow tip of the Bering Strait.
However, in the body of water between Alaska and Russia, known as the Bering Strait, are two small islands known as Big Diomede and Little Diomede. Interestingly enough, Big Diomede is owned by Russia while Little Diomede is owned by the US.
The stretch of water between these two islands is only about 4 km wide and actually freezes in the winter so you can technically walk from the U.S. to Russia on this seasonal sea ice.
