The law: "That a well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the proper, natural, and safe defense of a free state, therefore, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

Not the law: "The younger Lucas is now facing a citation under Virginia Code 18.2-287.01. This law makes it illegal to possess or transport a firearm or other weapon into an airport terminal. It is a Class 1 misdemeanor, and the punishment can include up to 12 months in jail and/or a $2,500 fine."

Also illegal is the common addition to many modern statutes, where the government claims that the law is the law except for itself and its friends:

"The provisions of this section shall not apply to any police officer, sheriff, law-enforcement agent or official, conservation police officer, conservator of the peace employed by the air carrier airport, or retired law-enforcement officer qualified pursuant to subsection C of § 18.2-308.016."
