From what I understand, there was a point in history where the air was more oxygen rich. People (and animals/plants) grew to much larger sizes. They have even recreated recently under controlled conditions a similar atmosphere and seen the insects grow larger. Wounds heal quicker too, which may have led to the stories around 'superheros'.
