Very similar in function but they only differ in standard stock type. They don't have interchangeable parts. But the AR is "scary" for some reason. The Mini-14 was the go-to rifle/carbine for the 1980's action heros. The ARs have a much more modular design where the Mini-14 is a scaled down version of the M-14.
