As far as I know, Washington, D.C. can refer to three things:
1) the capital of the U.S.
2) the D.C. Metropolitan area of almost 6.9 million people
3) the City of Washington which is 1/10th that population
Questions still need to be answered:
-When did washingtondc.gov make the switch to dc.gov?
-What is the significance of changing the website to dc. gov versus washingtondc.gov?
