Well if they do, they’re idiots. It was inside the Saturn V between the third stage and the service module. Once the craft was in lunar orbit the protective panels surrounding it were jettisoned. It was then untethered and the command and service modules did a “somersault maneuver in order to dock with the LM. They then undocked and flew the LEM to the surface of the moon. Only the small crew module left the moon. The legs remained on the surface. It looks small and flimsy in photos. It isn’t.
