It became a big deal in the early 90s how many world prominent microbiologists were being outright murdered and or died under suspicious circumstances. Over a hundred. The one thing that people found that tied them all together was they all seemed to be involved in prion research.

The linked article has a dozen or so? Seems I may have been wrong on the time frame. Most articles I just found (search: "dead microbiologists") point to the 2000-09 time frame.
