Chemelot is the largest industrial complex in the Netherlands and produces much of the plastic that is sold in the Netherlands. This company has applied for – and received – a permit to discharge more than 14,000 kilos of microplastic per year into the Maas for the next 7 years.
These particles do not break down and end up in our surface water, which is used for drinking water. I couldn't believe it myself that the government is giving permission for this, but a report with parliamentary questions shows that the choice was made consciously.
This company is in the top 10 of the most CO2-producing companies in the Netherlands, even above Shell and Nuon. Chemelot has been participating in Operation Clean Sweep since last year, helping to clean up plastic litter from the sea; it couldn't be more hypocritical.
