Ever dreamt about finding a lost library? This is what happened in Romania recently...
.
The spectacular find was made in the steeple of the local St. Margaret's Church. The town of Medias in Central Romania was founded around 1250 by Transylvanian Saxons, a German-speaking population group. These people also built the church and seem to have started creating a library. Then, at the end of the 16th or during the 17th century, an employee of the church seems to have moved part of the book stock: From the library proper, the now discovered works were brought to a chamber in the church tower. There, correctly sorted, they were stored - and forgotten. Until today.
.
Among the finds are over 130 books dating between 1470 and 1600, and a number of manuscripts which might go back as early as the Carolingian era (9th century)!
.
The books are now being documented and preserved by the a research team from Babes-Bolyai University.
