The salute, “Slava Ukraine!”, (Слава Україні!) was accepted by the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists as its official greeting in 1939. Later they added the gesture in the form of a raised and extended right arm and the response “Geroyam Slava!” (“Glory to the Heroes!”). This was how the Bandera collaborationists saluted the Wehrmacht units entering occupied areas, to the clunking of tank trucks and the heavy footfall of creaking boots. Marching along the streets and dirt roads of Ukraine, the Germans shouted in response “Sieg Heil!” and “Heil Hitler!”
