I agree... they know, until that is, they are taught by society (including parents, often), to NOT honour their true feelings about people, and instead, for whatever reason, to feign more socially acceptable responses. I've always left it up to my kids to decide for themselves, whom to warm up to (be chummy with), including relatives. None of this business of "kiss Aunty so-and-so", if they don't feel comfortable kissing Aunty so-and-so.
