I was never told that.
Usually it was vague stories or explanations of my soul; or a little insight or tease of what I could be followed by a short blunt statement hat was quickly taken away just to keep me around,
'your special because of [fill in the blank]..... but'

*They should have let it happen naturally, nurture and guide it. No matter if it appear to be stronger or not, or if it felt like a threat; and not try to control it or suppress it. if it fails then fails

I've been a victim of narcissism my whole life - a fly to ointment !
Being an (Sigma) INFJ doesn't help either. 😄
It's probably because of peoples first impressions of seeming innocence and somewhat naive.
I rather not be combative, trama there yes, and that does not help ward off narcissism
It's not that I don't trust myself, but I've been beaten down so much I wonder, what's the use; and with little to no recourse in doing so.

You are right, and I've always known this is a moment, but "how and why" has always escaped me. Never really cared for glory, but always wondered why I'm passed up; also never like being pushed because that forces something that is not ready
