The other issue with the banks is they are holding Treasuries with a coupon of zero or 1. Rates now 7 -8 . Value of treasuries held by banks has plummeted because the value goes down when rates go up. Banks are facing yet another liquidity/ capital shortage. This will crush them at the same time US Govt defaults on debt.

Excellent point!!! Bad accounting doesn't demand corps to revalue their financial statements for interest rate induced losses. How many companies are walking around with giant holes in their balance sheets due to what you're pointing out...
