Andrew Coxall, Production Lead at BAE Systems Australia, shares an update on the Hunter-class / SEA 5000 frigate program which calls for the delivery of 6 anti-submarine warfare frigates to the Royal Australian Navy.

The new Hunter-class frigate scale model on display on BAE Systems stand at Indo Pacific 2025 showed the final configuration of the ship, in particular the final shape of the mast with the CEA radar arrays.

The Hunter Class frigate, which is a modified version of BAE System’s Type 26 frigate, will be one of the most advanced anti-submarine warships in the world. The 6 Hunter Class frigates will be built in Australia by ASC Shipbuilding (now known as BAE Systems Maritime Australia, a subsidiary of BAE Systems Australia Ltd) at the Osborne Naval Shipyard in South Australia.

Navantia Australia has presented the new Alfa 4000 Light Frigate design during the Indo Pacific 2025 Maritime Exposition in Sydney.

The Alfa 4000 is a significant redevelopment of earlier proposals the company offered for Australian and other international requirements. These two designs were the Tasman-class corvette and the Alpha 5000 Combatant. The shipbuilder two years ago at Indo Pacific 2023 proposed the Tasman-class for the then notional "Tier 2"-requirement of the Royal Australian Navy. The Tasman-class is directly related to the Alpha 3000-design the builder has sold as "Avante"-class to Saudi-Arabia.

Navantia Australia exhibited an innovative new landing craft concept called Unmanned Landing Craft (ULC) at the Indo Pacific 2025 naval exhibition held in Sydney from 4-6 November 2025.

As indicated by its name, a key characteristic of this next-generation landing craft concept is that it requires no crew aboard the platform. It is also modular, so multiple ULCs can combine together in various configurations.

The ULC is versatile, able to create a jetty, floating bridge, landing platform or just simply act as a regular landing craft. Furthermore, it is able to operate in open water, riverine or littoral environments, where it can perform ship-to-shore, ship-to-ship, or shore-to-shore movements.

Civmec's Capability Enhancement for Arafura-Class OPV
Australian shipbuilder Civmec has revealed a number of upgrades for RAN Arafura-class OPVs termed "Capability Enhancement". The builder presented the proposal as part of their presentation at the Indo Pacific 2025 International Maritime Exposition in Sydney.

The main gun-upgrade would be the Bofors 57 mm Mk 3 autocannon. The gun is already part of the basic PV-80 design, from which Australia adapted the Arafura-class. Courtesy of programmable ammunition the gun offers significant flexibility in engaging surface-, air- and land-targets. The Bofors Mk 3 is in use with a number of foreign navies, beyond Brunei also on German coast guard OPV and the navies of Sweden, Finland and Canada, among others.
