July 31, 1991 — Clarence Thomas and his 91-year-old cousin Jack Fuller during his brutal confirmation battle, which Thomas would refer to as "a high-tech lynching" led by Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee Joe Biden.

Family and friends from Georgia visited Thomas in Washington DC to support him during the politicized character assassination process designed to keep the conservative judge off of the Supreme Court.

Here is Justice Thomas in the new book, "From Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words", on what the visit meant to him:

"They came up to reassert the reality, the context of my life, that was constantly being distorted by the so-called "tolerant" people. The irony has never escaped me... It meant so much that my cousin Jack, at age ninety-one, would come in at a time of difficulty to rescue me from the so-called "tolerant" people."
