A lion cost a leading AI company half a million dollars during a single experiment.
In Africa, researchers wanted to see how far artificial intelligence could go, so they sent a prototype robot, trained on thousands of animal images and emotional datasets, face to face with a real lion. On paper, the system was flawless. It could identify joy, fear, anger, and stress with remarkable accuracy.
Then the lion stepped into view. The robot froze almost immediately. Its internal logs recorded only three words: “Cat. Big. Scared.”
After that, the system began looping, repeating “scared” more than a hundred times before shutting down completely. Memory wipes didn’t help. The fear had embedded itself so deeply that afterward, every four legged animal it encountered, from goats to house cats, triggered the same response: “No. Scared.”
Engineers were eventually forced to remove and rebuild part of the robot’s CPU, a fix that cost the company nearly half a million dollars and months
