Complaints about the level of education in the USA have been around for a long time. In 1993, the results of a study on US literacy commissioned by the Department of Education were published. It lasted 4 years and was attended by 26,000 people. It turned out that in America there are 27 million illiterates and 45 million so-called functional illiterates, ie. people who know how to read and write but cannot use these skills properly. Half of the people who achieved the worst results were university graduates.

While in 1947 45 percent of American schoolchildren could show Europe on a map, in 1988 it was only 25 percent. This decline in knowledge occurred despite America spending more money on education in the 1980s than ever before (it was second only to Switzerland in terms of population per capita). However, when it came down to it, 40% of European high school students and only 10% of Americans were able to solve the same mathematical problems.
