The whole point of going to a beach is to get a good tan, why in the world would you be rubbing sunblock on yourself? It never made sense to me, When I went to the beach when I was young, I would rub baby oil on my body

We used cooking oil too sunbathe on the Ascension Island -- After a month of climatizing to the Equator you could go out 120 F heat and not get burned !

First month you could and did get burn`t until your body has changed to the new enviroment
