I’m proud to present to you the first in a series of extremely profound posts, entitled “The Great Unbrainwashing”. This wonderful series is composed by our amazing Mod, Claudia, and is quite well worth your time and attention. Without further ado, I present to you article #1 of The Great Unbrainwashing
THE GREAT UN-Brainwashing
1. The term 'empath' was coined in the 1950s in a science fiction novel as a paranormal concept. It was popularised in the early 2000s as a label for very sensitive people who take on others' emotions.
The word empathy comes from the Greek, meaning 'in suffering'. Anyone understanding the deep psychological power of words will know that when we think or speak this of ourselves or others, we are telling the subconscious to reflect more of this into our reality, thus creating more 'in suffering'. You embody what you believe and affirm.

Pop psychology, spiritual gurus and wannabe behavioural experts have, over the last 2 decades, labeled anyone showing sensitivity, compassion or a deep awareness of emotion, as an empath. This label (or any label) oftentimes puts a deep level of burden and expectation on a person and does not address a root cause.
Additionally, the label 'empath' is often coupled with another popular buzzword diagnosis, the 'narcissist'. This has created the mass consensus that anyone displaying certain qualities, must indeed fall under either of these categories. Furthermore, assigning the two roles to all relationships as a stereotypical dynamic, where the two people take on these opposing characteristics.
In the last 5 years, the empath has, by popular belief, evolved into the narcissistic role. This is evident in the explosion of TikTok videos on this topic. It can create untold havoc in the mind and in the emotional responses of an already fragile individual.

This inadequate labeling has also set up relationships for failure, destroys existing ones and causes much division. Are we being sorted into these categories that limit the self? Is this restriction eliciting depression and anxiety, through expectation, guilt, regret or blame? Are we not better off focusing on our personal values, ethics and morals instead?
