Let's go back to Constantine & the Council of Nicea, whereby the Good Books were edited & torn apart to enforce the control of the Roman Empire over the Western world. One of these tenets that was constructed was the fabrication "Thou art Peter & upon this rock I will build my church". You see, the fact that the avatar "Jesus" told his diciples (followers) not to worship him but that God is within & they would go on to do even greater than he. He told them not to worship him, but to go forth & do good works for all of humanity.
The Romans were just out to find another way to control the masses in their ever expanding empire. Remember "All roads lead to Rome". If the Romans could co-opt an expanding consciousness to their advantage, they would be able to force obedience to their dictums. "Give to God what is God's, and to Ceasar what is Ceasar's " in other words - pay your taxes you dumbies.

There was more than one Council of Nicaea so they had many years to alter Christ's message I believe.
As a history professor, I lay a lot of the blame for such changes right at Eusebius' feet. He romanticized Constantine and elevated him when the entire reason for the creation of the Church, in my opinion mind, was the furtherance of the Roman Empire.
Constantine may not have been a true Christian but he could see which way the wind was blowing and understood that in this religion was the stuff of total societal control.
As I say, just my thoughts but I am making a rather educated guess on this having studied and taught this era.

So glad to hear your thoughts, I am going by my gut instinct since I was brought up in the Catholic church and had to look hard at all the ways it was ruining my life. I am glad to have left, but from the outside, I see the character of Jesus as a composite drawn from several enlightened persons in the early era of our present time keeping calendar, actually going back several thousand years BC. The personage of Jesus is a model for emulation, though not to worship in my view.
