Let's go back to Constantine & the Council of Nicea, whereby the Good Books were edited & torn apart to enforce the control of the Roman Empire over the Western world. One of these tenets that was constructed was the fabrication "Thou art Peter & upon this rock I will build my church". You see, the fact that the avatar "Jesus" told his diciples (followers) not to worship him but that God is within & they would go on to do even greater than he. He told them not to worship him, but to go forth & do good works for all of humanity.
The Romans were just out to find another way to control the masses in their ever expanding empire. Remember "All roads lead to Rome". If the Romans could co-opt an expanding consciousness to their advantage, they would be able to force obedience to their dictums.
