My theory is that they pilfered the Library of Alexandria (and any others like it) then burned it to the ground telling people it all burned. I'm hoping that all of that was stored in the underground tunnels for THEIR use/pleasure/knowledge....keeping us in the dark about so many things by doing so. Just my own theory.
