Montana Governor Greg Gianforte signed the FIRST U.S. law banning TikTok on Wednesday, May 17, set to take effect in January 2024. A statement from the governor’s office said that violators of the new law will be liable to pay $10,000 per violation and an additional $10,000 each day the violation continues.

In March, a congressional committee grilled TikTok chief executive Shou Zi Chew about whether the Chinese government could access user data or influence what Americans see on the app.
