The religious meaning became tangled with the existing pagan fertility-rites of spring. All manner of symbols of fecundity and fertility were celebrated - eggs and chicks because they represented new life; rabbits because they multiplied rapidly. The village would dance round the Maypole, and a young girl was selected as ‘Queen of the May’, and bound to the pole with ribbons. (The maypole was clearly a phallic symbol with the young girl symbolizing the promise of high fertility).
