Symbolism will be their downfall because symbols are abstractions of reality, and cheap to manipulate compared to reality. You can use faked symbols (e.g. the garb of royalty) to persuade people that the unreal (e.g. illegitimate monarch) is real. Or you can put covert symbols (e.g. paedo swirl) to openly indicate the true intent of something. Illusions are easily constructed or labelled using symbols. Was inevitable as their method — and weakness. It always introduces a flaw of the language of illusion or manipulation becoming widely known.
